Shrink-wrapped return pallet next to a single inspected box with a red half-price tag — are Amazon return pallets worth it

Are Amazon Return Pallets Worth It? Pallets vs Single Items

, by Half Price Store Team, 1 min reading time

Return pallets look cheap until you count the junk rate, fees and freight. When pallets make sense — and when inspected single items win.

Amazon return pallets look irresistible on paper: hundreds of dollars of retail value for a fraction of the price. The honest answer is that pallets are worth it for a small group of buyers — and a money pit for everyone else. Here is the math that decides it.

What you actually get in a pallet

A returns pallet is unsorted and mostly untested. Industry rule of thumb: roughly a third of items are fine, a third have missing parts or cosmetic damage, and a third are broken or unsellable. The manifest, when there is one, lists what was shipped back — not what condition it arrived in.

The costs nobody advertises

  • Buyer's premium — auction fees add 10–18% on top of your winning bid.
  • Freight — a pallet shipped within Canada commonly runs $150–$350.
  • Your time — testing, cleaning, photographing and disposing of the junk third.
  • Storage — a pallet does not fit in a condo.

Fold those in and the 'cheap' pallet often lands at 50–70% of retail value for a pile where a third goes to the curb.

When pallets do make sense

If you resell for a living — you have space, tools, time and sales channels — pallets are legitimate inventory. That is literally our business model: we buy in bulk, absorb the junk rate, and do the testing so you do not have to. The difference between overstock, clearance and liquidation stock matters a lot here too — overstock pallets carry far less risk than returns pallets.

When single items win

If you just want a good appliance cheap, buying an individually tested and graded item beats gambling on a pallet every time. You pay somewhat more per unit, but 100% of what you buy works, is photographed, and can be returned if it is not as described.
