How We Inspect, Test and Grade Every Item

Every item we sell is inspected, tested, and graded by hand before it goes live. Here's exactly how our grading process works — and why our honest condition labels mean what they say.

When you buy a returned or open-box product, one thing matters more than anything else: can you trust the condition label? At Online Discount Store, every single item is inspected, tested, and graded by hand before it ever goes live. Here is exactly how that process works — and why our honest grades mean what they say.

Why honest grading matters

A condition grade is a promise. “Open box” should mean open box; “used – good” should mean lightly worn but fully working. When a seller cuts corners on grading, shoppers get surprises at the door. We built our process to make sure the item you receive matches the label you clicked — every time.

Step 1: Intake and sorting

Every shipment of overstock and returns is unpacked and logged on arrival. Items are separated by category and given a first-glance sort, so nothing skips inspection. At this stage we also set aside anything that needs closer attention — missing packaging, obvious damage, or incomplete bundles.

Step 2: Functional testing

This is the heart of the process. We power on and test the working parts of an item to confirm it does what it is supposed to. For electronics that means checking that it turns on, that ports and buttons respond, and that key functions work. For appliances it means confirming the motor, heating element, or core mechanism runs correctly. If an item does not perform, it does not get listed as working.

Step 3: Cosmetic inspection

Next we look at the outside. We check for scratches, scuffs, dents, and any wear that affects appearance but not function. This is what separates a “like new” item from a “used – good” or “used – fair” one. Cosmetic notes are recorded so the listing reflects the item’s real appearance.

Step 4: Assigning an honest grade

With testing and inspection done, the item gets a grade: New, Like New / Open Box, Used – Good, or Used – Fair. If there is a specific flaw — a crack, a missing remote, no original box — we state it plainly in the listing rather than burying it. For a full breakdown of what each grade means, see our guide to open-box vs. new vs. refurbished vs. used.

Step 5: Cleaning, repackaging, and listing

Finally, items are cleaned up, repackaged where needed, and photographed or described for the store. Accessories that belong with the product are noted, and anything missing is disclosed. Only then does the item go live for you to buy.

Our promise to you

Two commitments sit behind every listing. First, honest disclosure: we describe the true condition and name any flaw up front. Second, a 30-day return policy on every order, regardless of grade — so if something isn’t as described, you are covered. That is also why buying Amazon returns from us carries none of the usual guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

Do you test every single item?

Yes. Every item passes through functional testing and cosmetic inspection before it is graded and listed. Nothing is sold sight-unseen.

What happens if an item can’t be tested fully?

If something can’t be fully verified, we say so in the listing and grade conservatively. We would rather under-promise than surprise you.

What if my item doesn’t match its grade?

Contact us within 30 days. Our return policy covers every order, so a mismatch is always something we’ll make right.

Are accessories always included?

When an item is missing an accessory or its original box, we disclose it in the listing. If it isn’t mentioned as missing, you can expect it to be included.

Questions about how a specific item was graded? Just ask — we’re happy to walk you through it before you buy.
