Open-Box Christmas Trees and Decorations in Canada: What to Check Before You Buy

, by Half Price Store Team, 4 min reading time

Pre-lit trees, garlands and wreaths are returned for height and light colour, not faults, and reach open-box stores in October and November at 40–50% off. What to test, what's usually missing, and when prices are lowest.

Artificial Christmas trees, pre-lit garlands and wreaths are returned in large numbers every year, almost always for reasons that have nothing to do with whether they work: the tree was too tall for the ceiling, the lights were warm white when the buyer wanted multicolour, or the box arrived after the family already bought one locally. Those returns reach open-box stores in October and November, right when you want them, at 40–50% below retail. Here is what to look for, what to test, and when the prices are lowest.

What gets returned, and why that's good news

  • Pre-lit artificial trees. Returned for height, fullness and light colour. A 6 ft tree in a 7 ft box is a complete, unused tree at a used price.
  • Pre-lit garlands and wreaths. Usually opened, tried on the mantel, and sent back for size or colour.
  • Light strings and net lights. The most-returned category, often because one set in a multi-pack didn't match. Easy to test, cheap to buy.
  • Inflatables and outdoor figures. Returned for scale and for wind. Check the blower and the stakes.
  • Tree stands, skirts, storage bags and ornament sets. Small, cheap, often perfect.

Buying an open-box artificial tree

An artificial tree is a one-time purchase that lasts a decade, so the open-box saving is real money. Check these five things:

  1. Height versus your ceiling. Leave at least 15 cm for a topper. A "7.5 ft" tree needs an 8 ft ceiling.
  2. Tip count and construction. More tips means a fuller tree. Hinged branches set up in minutes; hook-in branches take longer and are the ones more likely to be short a piece in a return.
  3. Light type and colour. LED trees use a fraction of the power of incandescent ones and run cool. Confirm whether the lights are warm white, multicolour or switchable, and whether there is a foot pedal or remote.
  4. Count the sections. A three-section tree with two sections in the box is a parts bin. A listing that says "complete, tested" means someone opened the box and counted.
  5. Plug it in. Pre-lit sections connect to each other; test every section lights, and check that one dead bulb doesn't take down a run.

Buying open-box garlands, wreaths and lights

These are low-risk because they are easy to test in a minute. Plug in or load batteries, check every function on the controller (steady, twinkle, timer), and look at the clips and hooks. For battery garlands, confirm the battery box lid and cover are present; it is the piece most often lost. For outdoor lights, check the label for an outdoor rating and the plug for a weather cap.

When prices are lowest

Open-box holiday stock is cheapest in two windows. Late October to mid-November has the best selection: last year's returns plus this year's early ones, before the rush. The week after Christmas has the lowest prices on whatever is left, but selection is thin and you are storing it for eleven months. For a tree, buy early; for extra lights and decor, the January clearance is fine.

FAQ

Is an open-box artificial tree used?

Usually it was set up once, or not at all, and returned for size or colour. The listing's condition grade tells you which; "like new" means complete with nothing found at inspection.

How long does a pre-lit LED tree last?

The branches last indefinitely with careful storage. LED strings are rated for tens of thousands of hours, so ten seasons is typical. Store the tree upright in its bag, not crushed in the original box.

Can I use indoor light strings outside?

No. Only strings and extension cords rated for outdoor use, plugged into a GFCI outlet, should go outside in a Canadian winter.

What if a section of lights fails later?

Most pre-lit trees have replaceable bulbs and fuses in the plug. Keep the spare bulbs that come taped inside the box; if the box was a return, ask whether they are included.
