Pendants, chandeliers and vanity lights are returned constantly for size and finish, which makes them one of the best open-box buys in Toronto. Where to find them below retail, and the checklist before anything goes on the ceiling.
Light fixtures carry some of the biggest percentage markdowns in home goods, and Toronto is a good place to buy them below retail: dense housing, constant renovations, and a steady flow of returns from people who ordered a chandelier online and found it was the wrong size for the room. If you want a pendant, chandelier, vanity light or ceiling fan for roughly half the sticker price, you have four options. Here is how they compare, and what to check before anything goes on the ceiling.
Lighting is bought from a photo and judged in a room. The most common reasons a fixture comes back have nothing to do with it working: it hangs too low over the table, the finish doesn't match the taps, the "farmhouse" look was bigger in person, or the box arrived with a dented ring. A fixture that was returned for scale is a new fixture at a used price.
| Channel | Typical discount | What you get | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighting showroom clearance | 20–40% | Discontinued lines, display units | Final sale, no bulbs, no hardware |
| Big-box clearance aisle | 15–30% | Overstock, open packaging | Random stock, often last unit of a set |
| Habitat ReStore and salvage | 50–80% | Used, vintage, builder leftovers | Untested, old wiring, no returns |
| Open-box liquidation | 40–60% | Returns, inspected and listed individually | Check what's included |

Every fixture is a single listing with its own photos and condition grade, tested before it goes live. Browse lighting, ceiling lights & chandeliers, wall & vanity lights, ceiling fans with light and lamps. Free pickup in Etobicoke, free shipping in Ontario over $150, and 30-day returns if it doesn't suit the room after all.
If the fixture carries a Canadian certification mark and the wiring and LED board test fine, an open-box fixture is the same product as a new one. Most were returned for size or style before ever being wired in.
Integrated-LED fixtures have the light built in. Fixtures with E26 or E12 sockets usually ship without bulbs, new or open-box, so budget a few dollars for them.
Homeowners can do their own electrical work in Ontario, but anything beyond a like-for-like swap on an existing box should be done by a licensed electrician and may need an ESA permit. Condo rules are often stricter.
A common rule: add the room's length and width in feet, and that number in inches is the fixture diameter. A 12 by 14 ft room suits a fixture about 26 inches across.
