Steam Cleaner Buying Guide: Handheld vs Canister, What Steam Can Clean, and Open-Box Deals

Steam cleaners sanitize grout, upholstery, car interiors and stovetops with plain water. Here's the difference between handheld and canister models, which surfaces to avoid, and what to test on an open-box unit.

Short answer: for a whole home — grout, floors, upholstery, car seats — get a canister steam cleaner with a hose and a big tank. For quick spot jobs in the kitchen and bathroom, a handheld is cheaper and easier to store. Either way, steam cleans and sanitizes with plain water, which is why it's popular with pet owners and parents.

The four types of steamers people confuse

Handheld steam cleaner — compact kettle-style body, small tank (about 350–450 ml), 10–15 minutes of steam. Great for faucets, tile corners, stovetops and car cupholders.
Canister (multipurpose) steam cleaner — wheeled or carry body with a hose, extension wands and 20+ accessories. Larger tank (1–1.5 L), longer run time and higher pressure. This is the “do the whole house” option.
Steam mop — upright, floors only. Fast on sealed tile, but no detail work.

What steam cleans well

Tile grout and shower glass (soap scum lifts much more easily when hot)
Stovetops, range hoods, oven doors — grease softens under steam
Upholstery and mattresses (freshening and spot cleaning; it won't extract deep stains like a carpet cleaner)
Car interiors: seats, vents, door pockets, cupholders
Window tracks, sliding door rails, radiators and baseboards

What to keep steam away from

Unsealed or waxed hardwood — heat and moisture can warp boards and lift finish.
Laminate — moisture can swell the seams. Check the flooring manufacturer's guidance first.
Silk, velvet and delicate fabrics, plus anything that says “dry clean only”.
Electronics, painted drywall and antiques.
Cold glass in winter — a sudden temperature change can crack it. Let windows warm up first.

Specs that actually matter

Tank size and run time: 1.5 L gives you roughly 30–45 minutes of continuous steam; a handheld gives 10–15.
Steam lock / continuous steam button: saves your hand on long jobs.
Hose length: longer hoses (up to 5 m on some models) mean less dragging the unit around.
Accessory kit: nylon brushes for grout, a squeegee for glass, a triangular brush with a cloth cover for upholstery. Kits of 16–26 pieces are common.

Tip: use distilled water

Tap water in much of Ontario is hard, and minerals build up inside the boiler over time, reducing steam output. Distilled water, or descaling every few months, keeps the unit working much longer.

What to check on an open-box steam cleaner

Heat-up time: most units should be ready in a few minutes. A very slow heat-up can mean scale or a weak heating element.
Steam output: the trigger should give a strong, even jet — not spitting water.
Safety cap: it must lock and should not be openable while pressurized.
Hose and seals: look for cracks near the connectors and leaks around the handle.
Accessories: returns often come back with a few attachments missing. That's fine if the grout brush, nozzle and extension wand are there, since those do most of the work.

Steam cleaners are a great open-box buy: most returns happen because the buyer found it bigger (or smaller) than expected, not because it's broken.
